Tasmania, and indeed all of Australia, should be so proud that we have a world class maritime training institution aptly named Australian Maritime College (AMC).
AMC can rightfully claim the honour of being the global leader in maritime education and training, having been ranked #1 in the most recent International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) benchmarks. IAMU is a global network of leading maritime universities whose shared vision is to ensure the seafarers of today and tomorrow are well trained and qualified to meet the changing demands of the global shipping industry.
Anyone who has been to the Pacific will immediately know what the success the Pacific Patrol Boat program has been for Australia. A very large part of that success has been due to AMC, which has shepherded and managed the maritime training program over the last 28 years.
With the growing level of unrest in Indo-Pacific waters, this is not a time for the Australian maritime industry to be divided in our engagement with our Indo-Pacific partners. As a country, we should all be behind AMC’s continued involvement in maritime training in the region.
